Who stands to benefit most quickly?

Will you?

The shift to cloud computing is underway, and to some degree I can understand the concerns of organizations with tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of employees, though they too can benefit from this shift to cloud computing through an on premise approach.

What interests me are the reasons why companies with less than 1,000 employees are not aggressively investigating or pursuing cloud computing. Given their size, flexibility, entrepreneurial spirit, and their agility, they stand to benefit long before larger organizations.

If you’re a small to medium size business owner, what are your main concerns shifting to cloud computing?  Is it a lack of understanding of its benefits or other concerns?

From a benefits perspective, I would surmise that the ones below would be an attractive starting point for SMB / SME companies.

  • Pay for what you use.  No need to concern oneself with IT consolidation, virtualization, capacity (under) utilization,  capacity on demand, and a host of other IT management issues.
  • Ease of use.  Instead of multi-month IT implementation projects, systems acquisitions, deployments, installations, configurations, support, maintenance, upgrades, etc.
  • Flexible.  Anywhere, anytime, information access.  Scale up / down.
  • Green.  Efficient energy conservation and utilization, greater environmental sustainability due to higher efficiencies in energy, systems usage, even commuting (potentially – depending on employer).
